The Fishing Boat

The Fishing Boat is a piece that gathers various field recordings made in July 2023 in Magerøya in order to create an imaginary landscape of an experienced territory. This work focuses on the liminal space of a fishing boat between air and sea. The recordings were made from inside of fishing boats and they sound within three mediums: water, air and the boat—threshold between the two. Symbolically, by letting ourselves be immersed in sound we may stand in the liminal physical known world of the known conscious that is placed in between the aerial/spiritual and the aquatic/unconscious—and then let ourselves lean toward the crossing of those limits.

The installation was developed for Nitja senter for samtidskunst's stairwell. Vibration transducers activated the metal surfaces along the stairs, making some parts rattle with sounds and others diffuse sounds through the metal. Speakers filled the environment with oceanic soundscapes. Three pieces were composed and diffused at different times. Each one represented a level: underwater, in between (the boat) and over water. This boat-level and ascension is symbolically reproduced by the staircase.

The Fishing Boat was made possible by the joint efforts of Out.Ra, Nymusikk and Nitja senter for samtidskunst.
