OUT OF AIR, INTO AIR (2012)

(AN ASSEMBLAGE OF TOM SOLOVEITZIK’S AIR TWO THOUSAND ELEVEN)

BY ANDRÉ G PINTO

This composition is a re-‐interpretation of Tom Soloveitzik’s Air 2011 that gives emphasis to the role of recording devices in performance and composition contexts, specifically focused on the audiocassette medium. Originally, in Air 2011, the focus of the composition was to portray the essence of the ‘air’ in musical performance, raising the performer with issues of interpretation regarding their conceptions of air in the performance.

In this piece, the air is sucked, kept and replayed through electronic means, and the performer is asked to relate to the air out of the recorder as well as the air involving him. The performer is given the power of reconstructing a composition that is constituted of site specific performances divided by a time and space distance between the two relating performers.

The performers are requested to modulate by intuition and free will a piece of ‘air’ that is composed of bits of assembled air from different recordings of space and performance, by recording bits of air over other recordings of air.
